Shellac and the art of noise

Thoughts on music

Oh yes, Steve Albini is coming to town, playing in good ol' Amsterdam on the 27th of may, with his band Shellac, on the same day that we release this book.

In the eighties I listened a lot to Big Black, his first band, and I knew these lines by heart.

I was born in this town
Live here my whole life
Probably come to die in this town
Live here my whole life
Never anything to do in this town
Live here my whole life
Never anything to do in this town
Live here my whole life
Probably learn to die in this town
Live here my whole life

Allright, that was then, this is now.

I still love his noise, his raw energy, the dirty sound of his recordings, the crude language. Boy, the man ain't no sweet talker.

" I don't give two splats of an old negro junkie's vomit for your politico-philosophical treatises, kiddies. I like noise. I like big-ass vicious noise that makes my head spin. I wanna feel it whipping through me like a fucking jolt. We're so dilapidated and crushed by our pathetic existence we need it like a fix." Dixit Albini.

Albini is coming to town, and I will be there. Just like in the old days...
